I did this only recently with 2 of the biggest companies. One was out by more than $7000 to my shock, they actually refunded this to the account after the heavy weights at the government stepped in for me.

Our TOP 5 debt reduction pointers to help with your efforts

1. Goals - Set easy to follow and change credit goals. Meaning make them adjustable to your needs, not your wants. Like around Christmas you may need to pay the electricity bill but want the new Wii. What does the smart you do? You put $20-40 a week away for 13 weeks before the bill is due to be read. However the dummy who we won't name went and bought the new Wii and singstar game.

They would have been better off getting the exercise board pack and saving $1500 off the 3 gym memberships not to metion the late fee and deposit of $230 to get the power back on so they can play on the Wii... DOH.

2. Eating out on the town or even lucnh costs you often dearly. So say you spend $10-15 a day with average being $12 for lunch or a meal, plus $5 for a coffee. Then you eat out or have takeaway 3 times a week costing say $30 each. That adds up to say $170 because you felt sick one day and got no coffee.

Your total saving would be $8500. Now Pick one day a week to treat yourself to lunch so that is $600 for the year plus and treat yourself to 13 takeaways for the 13 months of the year say $400. OK you are now left with $7500

3. Groceries - I have lost count of and stunned at how many people I have seen who have developed a mental shopping condition. I call it BBBS or Brand Burnt Brain Syndrome for short. I am not going to name anyone here or speak ill of the dead but... a number of people in my family have even contracted this disease. I actually ran a number of tests each time I visit.

I will actually either make something or take something with me that is made solely from non branded products or old out of date products. MIND YOU I never put their life in jeopardy I alwways try the food first. After they devour it they turn to me and say something like.

What brand was that or that must have cost a lot how much can I give you for it? This will save around $40-60 a week, say $2500 for the year.

4. Clothing - I buy good sturdy clothes no flimsy stuff, usually rugger or bonds or the like. I for example buy 5 sets of clothes for home use, you know work round the yard etc. I wash these depending on how sweaty I get but usually once a fortnight. Now this seem like I get stinky, but not really. Hang on what's that smell? Oh I forgot to put deodorant on, back in a second.

OK the other thing I do with clothes is go to thrift shops or op shops to get my sturdy clothes at a fraction of the price. This would probably save me around $1000-3000 average $2000 a year. You would probably be more right?

5. Shopping - shopping in bulk for almost anything you can buy in bulk is usually best. A little trick I figured out is you have a god given device in your head to calculate the cost of things. Use this or a calculator to see which is better. Buying the name brand in bulk say 5 kilo of Vita brits for $35 or no name or savings brand wheat biscuits 5x 1.1 kilo giving 5.5 kilo for $14 I would say grab the savings brand and here is $20 for the bank account 3 times a year times 2 people so $240 a year saving.

That adds up to around a massive $12,200 IF YOU could do this for 10 (ten) years that would be around say $122,000 not to mention interest made on it. CAN you say debt paid off and Kaching.
